Frequently Asked Questions About Women's Plus Sized Motorcycle Pants
What defines plus-size in motorcycle pants for women?
Generally speaking, and going by the sizing accepted by many manufacturers, “typical” women’s motorcycle pants range from the 6 to 17 size range. This, by default, makes 18+ size gear “plus-size.” However, there are many different sizes in women’s hips and legs, so the only way to really determine if a pair of motorcycle pants will fit is to try them on.
Are there plus-size women’s pants for every type of riding?
The most common riding styles you’ll find plus-size women’s pants for are cruising, touring, and standard/sport-standard riding. Sport and ADV riding styles do have some plus-size options and are improving month by month, but they are still a few years behind in terms of having a full selection of gear. However, in the most general sense, yes, there is plus-size gear for all riding styles.
Are plus-size women’s motorcycle pants as safe as normal riding pants?
Absolutely. All motorcycle gear needs to adhere to certification and regulatory standards to be approved as personal protective equipment, no matter the size, shape, or design of the gear. There are minimum levels of abrasion resistance and armoring needed for street-grade motorcycle pants, and even more stringent ones for sport and race grade ones to be used for track days.
Are plus-size women’s motorcycle pants adjustable?
Unlike plus-sized jackets, motorcycle pants do not feature nearly as many adjustment options. Most of the time, the only real adjustable areas are the hips and the ankle cuff. Most textile and mesh plus-size pants feature stretch fabric zones to allow for some body-following conformity, but in the instances of leather pants and jeans, it can be more complicated to get a pair that fits 100% perfectly.
What are the basic measurements I need for plus-size women’s motorcycle pants?
You will need to know your waist measurement at the navel, your hips at the rotator joint or the thickest part as close to the rotator as possible. You will also need to know your thigh diameter at the thickest point while seated with your knees in a 90 degree angle, as well as your inseam, measured from the groin to the base of your malleolus (the “ankle bone”).
What about motorcycle leggings? Do those work for plus-size women?
It really depends on the manufacturer, but in general motorcycle women’s leggings are more designed for pure abrasion resistance over most other types of protection. You can get leggings with CE Level 1 or Level 2 armor at the knees via non-Newtonian impact foam, but even the manufacturers themselves often suggest pairing motorcycle leggings with a proper set of motorcycle riding pants. They do work for plus-size women if they come in sizes larger than 18 due to their stretch-fabric nature, but it is at your own risk if you wear just the leggings with no extra pants over top.
What To Think About When Shopping For Ladies Pants
One of the first pieces of gear that most riders purchase is a bike specific pants. The goal is to protect your body from abrasion related injuries as well as impact injuries, so most riders focus on the armor and density or durability of the shell of the pants.
However, in many cases, after several rides in that first pants, riders learn a great deal about what they didn’t know about motorcycle pants and what they didn’t know about their own priorities and preferences. And that learning curve is often far more steep for ladies as they are often forced to make do with a men’s pant rather than a gender-specific ladies pant.

At WBW, “Best” Actually Means Something
Remember when you could open up a review of something, and when the publication—magazine, car show, whatever—said “best” they stood behind it? Yea, we remember, and we’re bringing it back.
Here’s how we do things:
We disclose our affiliate relationships—We make money via advertising and affiliate relationships on our website. It’s how we pay our team and invest in things like sending Jim to Italy. And Japan. And France… wait… why do we always send Jim places?
We obsessively hands-on test—We wear and ride with gear before reviewing it, and we update reviews down the line if our opinions change. We look at real-world situations because that’s the world we live in.
We’re objective—Good gear is good gear, regardless of who made it.
We’re value-focused—Why pay $500 if something for $250 is just as good? Our review scores and recommendations reflect best value. Brand only goes so far—the gear has to stand on its own.
